Today, I had the pleasure to talk with Dorian Concept, a young talent from Austria who gained a lot of attention last year. Since his download-only Seek When Is Her from 2006, he added A TrebleO Beat Tape for Domu’s label, and his first 12-inch Maximized Minimalization on young Austrian label Affine to his discography.

Can you briefly tell us who you are and what you do ?

Definitely, I’m Dorian Concept – Artistname-Wise, in my 20s and live in Vienna/Austria. Also a multimedia-art Student, so therefore I study and besides that make mostly music by myself.

How did you get into making music? Is there a defining moment you can refer to?

In the “by myself” way I started making music about 6 years ago I believe. I think the most memorable experience I had, was just having my friend show me this programme called “Buzz”, which was a really cheap tracker music-making software. It was impressive to see how you get a melody line from typing in letters and numbers that stood for key and octave like “C#1 – D#2”. So in the beginning it was just fun, like an alternative to playing Mario Kart or something.

2008 must have been a busy year for you, touring all over Europe, releasing several records. Now, at the end of this month there will be “When Planets Explode”. Do you refer to it as your debut?

Yeah I think you could call it that. It’s like a debut mini-LP I suppose, because with its 30minutes it still leaves you with a certain need for an additional 15-20minutes. But yeah, it’s definitely a debut with the amount of tracks that are going to be on it.

It will be released through Nod Navigators, a fairly new sub-label of Kindred Spirits. Can you tell us a bit about them, how did this album come about?

Nod Navigators I feel is a playground for certain artists that are interested in experimenting with instrumental Hip-Hop or just electronic music, and had dope releases from people like Mweslee and Tom Trago. I was introduced to them through Cinnaman, one half of the Beat Dimensions, earlier last year, and from there on things just started taking their own course.

Which other labels are you working with, is there anything to look out for?

There is a fairly new label here in Vienna called “Affine Records”, which was founded by a good friend of mine. I had my first EP called “Maximized Minimalization” released on there a couple of months ago and also play keys for an instrumental jazzfunk-band called “JSBL”. Besides that I was part of a compilation for Circulations, who will also still release a 7” with two tracks this year, and did some stuff here and there.

But I will still have to see what this year brings, as I’m just trying to get some new stuff together after this release on Kindred Spirits.

I recently stumbled across Sam Irl, with whom you released a track on Bonzzaj. How did this happen? Is there more coming?

Sam and I did that track a while back. Because he is also based in Vienna, I was over at his house and we pretty much put the whole track together in one afternoon. He’s definitely an all round great person and dope musician to work with, and I’m sure we’ll head back to the studio at some point. But nothing planned for now.

You seem to make good use of the Internet to get people to listen to your music, how much do you think it contributed to your popularity?

That’s a good question. I definitely think that more people are aware of me now than before because of a couple of tracks that I put up for free download, but it wasn’t the main thing that got people talking. But I’m sure it’s a vital part. I think I tend to give away certain tracks, because my bond to them might not be as big as the bond I have to other tracks. I just have loads of music that I know I’ll never release, and in a way I’d feel guilty just keeping them all on my computer. So yeah, sometimes I just feel like sharing those tracks, eventhough I think I should maybe be more careful also because if the output of an artist is too big, it can happen that you don’t really appreciate the music that much anymore.

You attended the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, what did you take from there?

I met a bunch of really impressive people, that I try to stay in contact with but can’t because they’re so many! And one feeling that ill never forget is just being around 50+ musicians for two weeks straight. Listening to the stories they had to tell, from their worst DJ-gig to their biggest rave, from their Russian bought Software to their most expensive Synthesizers. I would’ve thought that I could get sick of just talking about music the whole day, but really, I didn’t.

Next week you’re playing at the Worldwide Awards. Any more gigs planned?

Yeah, there’s quite a lot coming up in the next 3 months. First off I’ll fly over to Australia and play at the “Laneway Festival”. It’s held in almost all major cities there like Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Then head over to China for two gigs and then back to Europe to play in Amsterdam and hopefully still in Athens, Switzerland and London again.

This "fidget house" (his flippant definition) classic has got the best appropriation of a track by a blind,
homeless street musician that dressed like Thor since Mr Scruff ("Night At The Dogs" ravages Moondogs
"Lament"). And if that isnt enough Hot Chip are back on their best "C-A-S-I-O P-O-K-E" form, this time
spelling out "R-O-S-E" over and over on dub funk single "Forget My Name", making two appearances
overall for that all-important celeb endorsement.

International Deejay Gigolo Eleven presented By DJ Hell

International Deejay Gigolo Records are set to release the eleventh in their series of unmixed compilations later this year.

The label will turn thirteen later this year and has had almost 250 releases since its inception, including tracks from Tiga, Jeff Mills, Dopplereffekt and Dave Clarke. None of them are to be seen on this selection, however. As DJ Hell tells it, this compilation is all about "the new Gigolo sound," and not the old, electro-tinged style, which means we have new Gigolo producers with a few surprise twists along the way.

The first is Herman Schwartz's instrumental version of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black," which replaces the vocals with a slow synth line. Ectomorph also contributes an edit of a Jamal Moss track, and Peter Kruder (of Voom:Voom and Kruder & Dorfmeister fame) sees the first vinyl release under his own name in over eight years. "Visions Ltd" will touch down on wax close to the release date of the compilation, which also features cuts from Lopazz, DJ Pierre, Motor and Abe Duque.

As you'd expect, the tracks are all personally selected by label boss DJ Hell, who took over a year to select the tracks that would make up Eleven. He's also set to follow up 2003's NY Muscle album later this year—proof that the 46 year old hasn't lost his passion for the club scene just yet.

Masters Series Part 12 Mixed By James Zabiela

Renaissance wunderkind James Zabiela will return to the label later this year with his newest mix in the imprint's Masters Series.

As Zabiela previously blogged, the mix will seek to give you a chance to hear the world through the DJ's ears. Zabiela carried around a microtrack recorder over the course of a month and subtly integrated things like the eye scanning machine at Heathrow and a baggage belt in Vilnius into the mix. The music on hand? It's a varied mix that goes from Boards of Canada to Modeselektor and Paul Woolford to Extrawelt over the course of two discs, proving (we can only assume) his master status.

Convextion - Convextion

Although he's only had a handful of releases since his debut on the Detroit label Matrix in 1995, Convextion has remained a byword amongst the techno upper-crust for his brand of cerebral, passionate, fantastically textured music, and has garnered a cult following -- including DJ's ranging from Derrick May & Kenny Larkin to Danny Tenaglia & Swayzak. The evolution of his sound reflects his roving infatuation with great sonic architects: he was inspired early on by the Cocteau Twins, Joy Division and early 4AD releases, and later discovered the beauty of Derrick May's strings, Virgo's basslines, the Burrell Bros' grooves, Juan Atkins' Deep Space vistas and the relentless pulse and mesmerizing echoes of Basic Channel (which catalyzed the Convextion sound after he heard it played by Paul Johnson one night at a club). A quick glance at Discogs shows that his releases are cherished and highly sought-after by both DJs and collectors, fetching high prices on eBay and at specialty vinyl shops. Long awaited and long overdue, his debut album contains 8 essential tracks recorded between 1996 and 2006.

Imps aka Minilogue- Bring Out the Imps

Mule Electronic is cool and so is Imps, a project put together by two Swedish producers by the name of Minilogue and two Australian jazz musicians known as Decoy. The outcome is an absorbing collection of tracks, a mix of soulful jazz experimental and quality minimalist groove. There are some real killers such as ‘Almost Live but Definitely Plugged’, a super-catchy funk-ridden 4/4 cut, and ‘Bubble & Squeak’, a fantastic piece of atmospheric jazz electronica. It’s obvious fun was had making this album, demonstrating what happens when contrasting but like-minded musicians come together.

RA.141 Marco Passarani


Marco Passarani mixes up records from the Peacefrog label on this week's RA podcast.

Marco Passarani has been instrumental in shaping the club culture of Rome since the early '90s, starting his journey as a radio DJ when the acid house explosion started to take hold in his hometown. After DJing in the local club scene for a few years, Passarani put out his first record on the Detroit-based Generator label, and from there on in he found himself fully immersed in the electronic music scene. As the boss of the Final Frontier umbrella (which includes labels such as Nature, Pigna and Plasmek), he's put out a diverse array of material that spans electro, house, techno and even IDM.

All of these styles inform his own production work, which combines Marco's vast knowledge of both American and European dance music culture with his penchant for vintage analogue synthesisers. His solo productions have found their way onto the likes of Viewlexx, Rephlex, Skam and Peacefrog, and it's the latter label that he has decided to showcase on his RA podcast. Whipping through twenty tracks in just 45 minutes, Passarani keeps the energy levels up with this bumping selection of tracks from the back catalogue of the respected imprint.

Release Notes
Its been ten years already, since Jacek Sienkiewicz established his
Recognition label, and six years since "Techne`", first artists full
length for Sven Va"ths Cocoon Recordings. The Warsaw-Frankfurt
connection seems to work quite well, as you are about to experience
Jaceks astonishing mix CD/compilation. For the last ten years Jacek
was carving his very own niche in this genre formerly known as techno.
Paying respect due to the classic masters of Detroit sound, he never
followed formulas and classic frames of what was once called minimal
techno, instead always working on both expanding and questioning the
music we used to know. Be it studio work, his countless live
performances around the globe, his collaborations with some of his
contemporaries or his work as a promoter introducing some of the
worlds finest talents to local audience - his actions, albeit always
on the side of club mainstream, were always deeply rooted in his very
own vision of electronic music as a true psychedelic experience. Hence,
the modern dance was born.

As we all know, dance is an art form, referring to the movements of
human body. Be it a form of ones expression, social interaction or the
extension of spiritual life, dance is most often associated with music.
Dance embodies emotions, expresses ideas and generally tells a story.
Music is the catalyst. The modern dance was raised out of rebellion
against the strict formulas of tradition - and so was the music you are
about to hear. Jacek Sienkiewicz has been exploring emotional,
physical, mental, communicative or finally artistic aspects of dance
and music for the last ten years. Probing and expanding boundaries of
classic techno music, filtering Detroit sound through innumerable
studio experiments, his music became the way to express his deepest
inner feelings and visionary creativity - and this is exactly what
modern dance is about.

As the tracks compiled here were originally released either on
Recognition, or Cocoon Recordings during past few years. And here Jacek
modestly presents his extraordinary mixing skills, applied to his
timeless club anthems - driving "Double Secret", hands-raising "Time
Starts Now", latest hit "Beacon", "Jeden" co-produced with Marcin Oz/DJ
Highfish, or most recent "Eastern Promises", performed together with
Chilean maestro Pier Bucci. Add to this Jaceks final Cocoon entry "All
Yours", simply designed to set this years dance floors on fire, and
closing midnight lullaby "Good Luck" - we come with a selection of
tracks serving both as a dоcument of timeless contemporary club music -
and, as the modern dance knows no rules and no limits, as the beginning
of something new...

“Around 2001, I moved in with a high school buddy of mine to Oakland, and we started going to crazy raves. I was working on my third career then, editing commercials for a post-production TV house. They had all this great equipment at the edit house, so I had this idea. [Up to that point] I had created all this original music but nothing ever happened with it, because I didn’t really know what to do after the music was done. I never really learned when I was a kid because no one was there to mentor me. So I thought to myself, ‘When I was 16 and getting into music, what would’ve been the ultimate instructional video that I could’ve watched?’ I came up with the idea for this DVD, to interview the most famous DJs in the world: asking them how they became famous, how they make music technically, how they run their label, all of that. I ended up interviewing 50 people, from Paul Van Dyk to Derrick May to Orbital, everyone. After two years, I didn’t have enough money to license the music, and I needed to have a piece of music playing under each interview. So Justin Martin, Nigel Richards (from 611 Records), this trance guy from Sweden and I made all of the music for the whole DVD by imitating the sound and style of each interviewee.
